Film History - The Silent Era
Who were the Lumiere Brothers brothers and what did they do?
The Lumiere Brothers are widely considered as the makers of the first film ever made - The Roundhay Garden Scene (1888), which depicts some people walking around in a garden; it's only a few frames long, but it still depicts the movement of the people. They then went on to make the first ever film screening at the Salon Indien Du Grand Café in 1895, where they showed a series of short films, including 'Workers leaving the Lumiere factory'. Later they would go on to make the 'Train arriving at Station', which was shown to the public in 1896. It reportedly made viewers duck away from the screen, as they had not seen anything like it before. They then developed on colour photography, as they didn't feel that their films would contribute to anything in the future.
