Post 8: Mise en Scène original still image task
This is my own still image for Mise en Scène. The lighting in it is calm and natural, evidently coming in through a window, but the overall light it brings to bring is quite dim. This would be a very different image if the lighting was harsh, making bold highlights and dark shadows. It would make it appear a lot more mysterious. Having lighting that is natural and dim makes the scene look at ease annd calm.
This shot is in black and white, but quite clear and modern. This implies that the choice of colour was an artistic one and not that it's old and had to be taken in black and white film. The lack of colour also makes the image feel calm and quiet, almost contemplative. There are no bright colours to distract the viewer from what is happening in the shot.
There is not too much detail in costume, looking at the person from the back, but you can tell that the girl is wearing lose-fitting, flowy clothing, perhaps implying that she is comfortable in her own skin, and easy-going. Her hair is up and is has sunglasses propped up on her head, showing that it could be hot and sunny where she is - maybe she is on holiday and travels often.
She is to the left of the screen, following the rule of thirds, this allows the set to be shown from behind her clearly, the statue in which is centred, perhaps drawing more attention to the setting than the person in focus. She is also looking away from the camera, which implies contemplation, and possible movement away from it, walking into the rest of the room.
There are no props within this shot, but the setting is very grand, and has many other people in it, taking photographs in the background. This implies that the grand place she is visiting is open to many, and that she has traveled somewhere to see sights, or is seeing sights before she has to do what she travelled there for.
This is great Emily, well done. I particularly like the 'contemplative' comment. Next time we do a similar task with deconstructing a still image choose a colourful, vibrant, fast-paced one to really compliment this one.
