Post 9: Mise en Scène
This is a shot from the film 'Her'.
Lighting:
The lighting is soft, not drawing too much attention to it. It's probably 3-point-lighting, lighting him from the top, left, and right.
Colouring:The colouring of this shot, discluding the main character, is cool and uses muted blues, browns, and greys. However, when you include him, the colour scheme is no longer analogue, and you're eye is brought to the bright red of his coat. The vibrancey of his clothes makes him stand out as a character, and implies that he is different from everyone else, or not wanting to associate himself with them.
Costume and Make-Up:Most things about the costume are linked to the points in colour. His outfit uses a lot of reds, distracting you from the outfits of the people in the background. He appears less uniform than the other characters, who where blues consistently and slightly more formal.
Composition:The protagonist is centred in the shot, bringing the attention to him. This is also done by putting him in the foreground of the piece. In the background you can see that there are mainly couples, emphisising the character's lonliness, as his expression also seems to show sadness.
Props/Setting:There isn't much in a way of props, as it is not in a close enough frame or in a smaller area, however, as it is a wide shot, it includes a lot of the background. The background shows a city, and reveals many people in smart clothing, implying that it is in a business area.
Good understanding of mise-en-scene Emily. Well done.
